Apple Crumble Recipe from 1936

This apple crumble recipe was printed in the Worcester Democrat out of Pocomoke, Maryland on October 9th, 1936.

INGREDIENTS

  • 6 cooking apples
  • ¾ cup brown sugar (150g)
  • ½ cup sifted all-purpose flour (55g)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (56g)

Note: All ingredients should be at room temperature unless otherwise stated.

  • Preheat oven to 375°F/190°C
  • Grease 8x8-inch baking dish

  1. Peel, core, and slice 6 apples.
  2. Work sugar, flour, salt, and butter together until it resembles wet sand.
  3. Line a baking dish with the apples slices.
  4. Then, sprinkle the sweet crumble mixture over the apples.
  5. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F/190°C for 30 minutes, or until the crumbs are browned the apples are tender.
  6. Serve warm with ice cream or custard for a sweet and delicious apple treat.
